Online Education Best Practices
Part B: Learning to See: Using Video to Support Learning, Connection and Community Online Video is a powerful tool that can be used to improve student observation skills, provide effective feedback, and improve students’ implementation of effective teaching practices. Most importantly for online learners, video can also be used to build Communities of Reflection and Practice (CORPs) where students have the opportunity to connect with their peers and instructors to discuss authentic problems of practice. The EarlyEdU Alliance offers an approach, course materials, and an innovative video coaching and annotation tool for college faculty to effectively leverage the power video in their online courses. In this interactive workshop participants will learn about the free tools available through the EarlyEdU Alliance and will practice and plan for how they might be used to build their own effective online course work and degree programs.

Gail E. Joseph, PhD
Katie Emerson-Hoss, PhD, MEd, is the Higher Ed Outreach and Implementation Manager for the EarlyEdU Alliance. She is responsible for outreach to key stakeholders at the state level as well as faculty and administrators at higher education institutions. Katie has a PhD in educational psychology, with a focus on early childhood special education and mental health, and a MEd in early intervention and family support. She brings a wealth of experience from her work as a home visitor, teacher and consultant with children, families, teachers and organizations on developing strong relationships for learning and well-being. Her teaching experience includes more than 15 years teaching undergraduates and graduates in early childhood and special education.
Gail E. Joseph, PhD, is a former Head Start and ECEAP teacher and the Bezos Family Distinguished Professor in Early Learning. She teaches courses, advises students, provides service and conducts research on topics related to early learning and equity, child care quality, teacher preparation, early childhood mental health and school readiness. She is the Founding Executive Director of Cultivate Learning at the University of Washington, and was the Director of the Head Start Center for Inclusion (Headstartinclusion.org) and Co-Director of the National Center for Quality Teaching and Learning funded by the Office of Head Start. At Cultivate Learning she oversees the work of quality ratings in all licensed childcare and PreK programs in the state and creates professional learning resources – such as Circle Time Magazine and the Meaningful Makeover series. Additionally, she is the Founding Director of the EarlyEdU Alliance. The EarlyEdU Alliance is focused on increasing the quality of early learning settings nationwide by making relevant, affordable bachelor’s degrees accessible to the early childhood workforce. Gail is the 2018 recipient of the David R. Thorud Leadership Award at the University of Washington.
